The Laughlin Invitational

The NTS crew made the road trip to Laughlin early Saturday morning for the Laughlin Invitational. What we found was a very well organized and fun cross country meet. Coach Tony Petrik and his staff at Laughlin HS put together a moderately challenging 2.9 mile course for the varsity runners and a 1.7 miler for the junior high kids. It was great to see all of the junior high kids from Laughlin and Arizona participate in this event. It made my think that we should somehow involve our junior high kids in our weekday meets. They have a series of meets tat these kids can run and most of the invites have junior high divisions, like the Las Vegas Invitational. We’re missing the boat not having something for our feeder schools.
In the junior high boys race, 29 boys toed then line. Kids from Kingman, Az took the first 4 places with Cody Nutt winning in 10:27. Las Vegan Brandy Yamka from Burkholder Middle School easily won the girls race in 10:16. Brandy is the daughter of Jim Yamka, assistant track coach at Green Valley. In all 28 girls finished the Junior High race.
In the boys varsity race, everyone figured that course record holder Cory Elder from Boulder City would repeat his 2002 win. At the gun, it seemed evident that Cory had plans on repeating. He and his BC teammates had the early lead. John Killian, from Prescott’s Chino Valley HS, played it a bit more conservatively. Killian allowed Elder and Faith Lutheran runners Brian Nestor and Justin Tully to set the pace. When the quick early pace slowed, Killian put the hammer down and never looked back. The smooth running junior won by 22 seconds and in the process established a new Laughlin course record. Following the race, John showed tremendous sportsmanship by congratulating each of the 81 finishers at the end of the chute. The team championship went to Faith Lutheran with 49 points. Faith had all 5 of their scorers in the top 22. Second place went to Chino Valley with 94, Boulder City was 3rd with 96 and River Valley was 4th with 98.
In the girls varsity race, BC’s Courtney Saylors led wire to wire and set a new course record of 17:41. In all there were 51 runners in the field. Parker, Arizona won the team championship with 58 points. They had 3 in the top 10 and their 5th was 24th. Ashley Bonds placed 2nd overall for Parker. Southern Nevada VoTech placed 2nd with a 1:05 gap between 1 and 5. Boulder City placed 3rd and Chino Valley was 4th.
In then future, if you’re looking for a nice invitational for your kids, pencil in the Laughlin Invitational. Chances are if the numbers keep growing, jv races will be added to the 2004 edition. Laughlin is a little over an hour by Mercedes from Henderson. Hey, if Virgin Valley can make it, so can you.
