Nevada Boys

Stephen Pottey (Galena--4A)

1st in ‘03 Northern Regional, 2nd at State

Pottey, who takes the line as the number-one Nevada qualifier, has made steady improvement as a four-year runner and three-time state qualifier. As a freshman he was an alternate on a team that finished third at state. His sophomore year he finished 8th at Regionals and despite “bad day” at State his 37th place finish overall (5th on his team) was good enough to ensure that Galena finished first as a team. His junior year he was 2nd at Regionals and finished 5th at State. This year Stephen won the Northern Nevada Regional and was runner-up at State behind Jonathan Cardenas (Reno) who is not competing in the Border War. His time at State (16:47) was second only to Cardenas.

Patrick Swick (Chaparral--4A)

1st in ‘03 Sunrise Regional, 6th at State

Swick brings an impressive record with him as he takes the line. He won State in 2002 and is a four-time All State runner: 6th as a freshman, 2nd as a sophomore, 1st as a junior, and 6th again this year. His record over the Veteran’s Memorial Park course as it will be run this year is perfect. He has twice the Sunrise Regional to go with his 2002 State win on this course.

Blake Scholtzhauer (Centennial--4A)

DNR ‘03 Regional, 5th at State

Scholtzhauer, a junior, is another of Nevada’s top runners. He didn't run cross country as a freshman but burst on the scene last year with his runner-up finish at State (behind Swick) after winning the 2002 Sunset Regional. He has always run well on this course.

Lupe Cabada (Lowry--3A)

1st in the ‘03 Northern Regional, 1st at State

Cabada, a junior, is a three-time All State runner. He was 9th as a freshman, 3rd as a sophomore, and 1st this year. He has the 4th fastest qualifying time, based on State, of any Nevada runner.

Daniel Geib (Galena--4A)

7th in ‘03 Northern Regional, 8th at State

Geib, a sophomore, has come out of nowhere this year. Not a top-seven runner for Galena in 2002, his 17:38 was 9th best at State in 2003.

Preston Mathews (Centennial--4A)

2nd in ‘03 Sunset Regional, 9th at State

Mathews, a senior, has usually been overshadowed by his teammates, but he a model of consistency and the consummate team player. A four-time State qualifier, he was the 6th man on his team as a freshman. His sophomore year he was 8th at Regionals and 11th at State. As a junior he was 3rd at Regionals and 20th at State. His time at State this year was good for 10th overall.

Andrew Carney (Centennial--4A)

1st in ‘03 Sunset Regional, 10th at State

Carney, a senior, didn't take up cross country until his junior year. Before that he played soccer in the fall. But soccer’s loss was cross country’s gain. Andy finished 18th at State as a “rookie” and this year improved on that considerably.

Josh Whitman (Fernley--3A)

3rd in ‘03 Regional, 2nd at State

Whitman, a senior, first made his mark in cross country as a sophomore when he finished 13th at State. His junior year he improved 11th at State. He and Cabada ran away from the field to finish 1-2 at State this year.

Brian Nestor (Faith Lutheran--2A)

1st in ‘03 Southern Regional, 1st at State

Nestor, a senior, is the only defending state champion competing for Nevada in this event. Nestor has won Regionals and State for the last two years. He is also a four-year state qualifier. He was 5th man on his Faith Lutheran team that was 2nd at State in 2000, and he was 4th at Regionals and 7th at State as a sophomore. He has always run well on this course.

Jonathan Shoop (Incline--2A)

1st in Northern Regional, 2nd at State

Shoop, a senior, is a three-time state qualifier who made big progress in 2003. He was 10th at State as a sophomore and 14th at State as a junior.

Trent Holthaus (Faith Lutheran--2A)

2nd at Southern Regionals, 3rd at State

Holthaus, a junior, is a three time state qualifier. He finished 6th at Regionals in 2001, 12 at State; and 2nd at Regionals, 9th at State in 2002.

Nick Schenk (Silverado--4A)

6th at Sunrise Regional, 17th at State

Schenk, a junior, has made terrific progress this year. Last year he was the 6th man on a mediocre team. This year he was the number one runner for Silverado and led his team to state.

Kasey Campbell (Basic--4A)

4th at Sunrise Regional, 18th at State

Campbell, a sophomore, was the highest finisher among sophomores in the Sunrise Regional. His progress has been rapid. As a freshman he was 22nd and 43rd at Region and State. Kasey is from a long line of Campbell’s who have run for Coach Larry Burgess at Basic.

Cory Elder (Boulder City--3A)

1st at Southern Regional, 5th at State

Elder, a senior, has had a solid running career at Boulder City but didn't come into his own until this year. He was 4th on the team as a sophomore and finished 21st at State. As a junior he improved to 18th at State. He should have a home-course advantage in this year's Border War.

Justin Proctor (Palo Verde--4A)

5th at Sunset Regional, 20th at State

Proctor, a senior, was a transfer to Palo Verde this year from out-of-state and he made an immediate impact as the number one runner on the team.

Raphael Rodriguez (Silverado--4A)

7th at Regionals, 21st at State

Rodriguez, a sophomore, was the number one freshman in southern Nevada a year ago and he qualified for State as an individual with a 9th place finish at Regionals. His 44th at State was somewhat disappointing. In 2003, with a year of experience behind him, he improved on that a great deal.

Kayden Campbell (Basic--4A)

8th at Sunrise Regional, 24th at State

Although overshadowed by his younger brother at Region and State this year, Campbell, a senior, has been a mainstay for Coach Burgess at Basic for four years, which means four years to State. He was the sixth man on the team as a freshman. He moved up on to number three on the team as a sophomore, and was generally the number two runner on his for his junior and senior year. This year was his highest State finish.

Jake Steinman (Lowry--3A)

7th at Northern Regional; 6th at State

Steinman, a junior, has made steady progress in three years. His freshman year he was the 4th man on his team and 19th at State. His sophomore year he moved up to 3rd on the team and 7th at State. This year he was number two runner for Lowry, behind state-champ and fellow teammate Lupe Cabada.

Devon Davis (Centennial--4A)

DNR at Regionals, 27th at State

Davis, a senior, has had a well-traveled career as a high school cross country runner. His freshman year he ran for Cheyenne and made it to state as an individual qualifier when he finished 11th in the Sunset Regional. He didn't run at all in 2001. Then in 2002 he made it to State again, this time with his Cheyenne teammates, and finished 33rd at State. In 2003 he transferred to Centennial and made it to State for the third time.

Garron Combs (Silverado--4A)

5th at Sunrise Regional, 33rd at State

Combs was hampered by injuries in 2003, but he made it to State for the fourth time, twice on a team and twice as an individual. As a freshman he ran for Green Valley, finishing 12th at Regionals and qualifying for State with his Sunrise-winning team. He then was rezoned for Coronado when it opened the next year and he finished 10th at Regionals, leading his team to a spot at State. Garron placed first on his team but 33rd overall. His junior year it was back to State for a third time. He was 10th again at/ Regionals in 2002 and 29th at State, this time running as an individual.

Cory Hawkins (Lowry--3A)

8th at Northern Regionals, 8th at State

Hawkins, a senior, is a first-year runner for the 3A champions.

Matt Jensen (Durango--4A)

11th at Regionals, 35th at State

Jensen, a sophomore, improved steadily all season. He placed 3rd in the SW League meet and led his team to a trip to state.

Nevada Girls

Kelsey Engstrom (Lowry--3A

1st at Northern Regionals, 1st at State

With the absence of the Collier sisters (Reno) from the Nevada team, Kelsey Engstrom has the fastest qualifying time, based on State, coming into this race. Kelsey, a senior, has had a fabulous high school cross country career! But for missing the State meet her junior year due to injury, she would be perfect, rather than just unbeaten in Regional and State meets: four Regional Championships and three State Championships.

Christa Avena (Bishop Gorman--4A)

2nd at Sunset Regional, 4th at State

Avena, a senior, has had a terrific four years of high school cross country, including an individual state championship. Her freshman year she won the Sunset Regionals and was 3rd at State. Her sophomore year she was second at Regionals and first at State. As a junior she was second at Regionals and “only” finished 17th at State. Christa has made a nice comeback this year and enters this race as the number two seeded runner for Nevada.

Katie Engstrom (Lowry--3A)

3rd at Northern Regionals, 2nd at State

Engstrom, a senior and twin sister of Kelsey, is Nevada's number three seed. Despite being overshadowed by her sister, she is gifted runner and a model of consistency. Four years of being the number two runner on a team that has won state by huge margins four years in a row. In eight races (Regional and State) in four years, she has never finished less than 7th .(She was 7th both her freshman and sophomore year at State.) In 2002 Katie was 3rd at State, and this year she cruised to her runner-up finish behsind her sister.

Amanda Gramly (Clark--4A)

1st at Sunset Regional, 7th at State

Gramly, a senior, didn't start running for Clark until her sophomore year, but she has been one of the top runners in southern Nevada ever since then and has improved every year. She was 6th at Regionals and 23rd at State as a 10th grader; 5th at Regionals and 12th at State as a junior. Amanda likes to run from the front and force the pace.

Kelly Fernandez (Silverado--4A)

1st at Sunrise Regional, 8th at State

Fernandez, a junior, didn't emerge as a super star until this year. She was 5th at Regionals and 29th at State in 2002. This year she has been consistently among the top three or four runners in southern Nevada. Kelly enters this race as Nevada's number five seed and the number one underclassman.

Alyssa Abott (Galena--4A)

5th at Northern Regionals, 9th at State

Abott, a sophomore, is northern Nevada's only 4A representative in this year's girls race due to the abstention of the Reno H. S.  runners. Alyssa finished 20th at State last year and stepped it up this year with her 9th-place finish.

Meghan Mathews (Centennial--4A)

Mathews, a senior, has been a super star ever since she was a freshman, when she was the individual runner-up at State. A four-time state qualifier with her team, the only time Meghan has ever finished out of the top 10 at a regional or state championship was when she finished 28th at State her sophomore year. Meghan has finished 3rd in the Sunset Regional four years in a row and was 5th at State in 2002.

Melissa Voss (Palo Verde--4A)

4th at Sunset Regional, 13th at State

Voss, a senior, is a four-year state qualifier and has been All State her last three years. Her two highest finishes at State were in 2001 and 2002 when she finished 9th both times. Melissa has a reputation as a come-from-behind runner, using her terrific finishing speed. (She won an 800 meter state championship in track as a sophomore.)

Megan Karl (Foothill--4A)

2nd at Sunrise Regional, 14th at State

Karl, a senior, is a four-time state qualifier. Megan was runner-up at Regionals her last two years and placed 23rd at State in 2002, her highest finish in a state meet prior to this year.

Samantha Topham (Palo Verde--4A)

6th at Sunset Regional, 16th at State

Topham is the top-seeded freshman on the Nevada girls team. She won the frosh girls race at this year's Southern Nevada Frosh-Soph Championships.

Lindsay Harris (Green Valley--4A)

9th at Sunrise Regional, 17th at State

Harris, a senior, has had four terrific years at Green Valley. In four trips to State, with her team, she has never finished out of the top 20. Her best finish was as a freshman when she was 12th. Likewise, she has never finished out of the top 10 at Regionals, with her best finishes in 2000 and 2001 when she finished 3rd.

Tasha Larson (Durango--4A)

5th at Sunset Regional, 18th at State

Larson, a junior, has made it to state three times and made steady improvement along the way. She has gone from 14th to 9th to 5th in three Regional finals. Her 18th place this year at State was her best finish.

Suhan Kupoglu (Green Valley--4A)

14th at Regionals, 20th at State

Kupoglu, a freshman, has given Green Valley--State runner-up behind Reno--an infusion of youth on a team loaded with experienced veterans. At State she beat a number of runners who had outrun her at Regi
