Mountain Crest Park was the location of the 3rd Annual Sierra Vista Invitational. Tim Dailey, Carrie Faber and all of the volunteers did an excellent job in hosting this event. In all over 300 runners entered the meet. There were 6 races held over the 2.5 mile course. The first event was the freshman boys race and as you could by the results, the cupboard isn’t bare at Basic. Six Wolves placed in the top 10 led by Chris Stiles’ 1st place victory. Eldorado placed 2nd, the only other complete boys team. Kurtis Hoppie from Eldo placed 2nd overall (wonder if he can high jump?) In the girls event, Durango raced to a narrow 2 point win over Basic. Capri Knox from Chaparral was the race winner. Vo-Tech placed 3rd (Nice turnout by VT by the way. Could be their largest team in quite some time)….The Varsity Boys race held true to form as Pat Swick from Chaparral placed 1st. The race was divided into Large and Small Schools. Cory Elder from Boulder City placed 2nd overall and 1st in the Small School division. Basic won the Large School title and Boulder City won the Small School title. But, if the race was NOT divided into divisions, (I love statistics )Boulder City would have placed 1st overall, Basic would have placed 3rd overall, and guess who would have been 2nd??? Durango…no. Chaparral…no. PAHRUMP VALLEY!!! Yes Pahrump would have been 2nd overall (we know that many ‘varsity kids” may have been running the 9th grade race, but, hey, nice job Pahrump)…In the girls varsity race, again pre-race predictions help form as Amanda Gramly raced to a :35 second win over Courtney Saylors. Courtney pressed the early pace and had the lead during the first lap of the course. Aggressiveness like that is good to see and can only pay dividends down the road. Durango won the Large School title and Boulder City the Small. Tasha Larson paced Durango with 4th place overall…The Girls JV race was won by Laughlin by 14 points over Durango. Laughlin placed their 5 scorers in the top 11. Dawn Newell from Durango was the race winner and Gracie Geremia placed 2nd from Laughlin…..In the Boys JV race Basic placed 7 in the top 11 for an easy win over Clark. Troy Steadman lead the way for the Wolves with the overall win…..
Ramdom thoughts…..It’s a family tradition at Basic High School. Stiles, Steadman, Campbell…they just keep coming. Just when you think they’re gone, another freshman brother or sister takes their place. Credit for that goes not only to the families but to Coach Burgess and “THE PROGRAM”….It’s my feeling that entry fees are based on who you enter, NOT who you bring. If you enter 15 kids and only 10 show up, you still pay for 15 kids. Most coaches are good about that. It’s just Coaching Etiquette. Don’t ask for a refund. Also, if your team enters the meet and the entire team “no shows”, that school should still be charged for the meet. It takes time and effort to enter kids, make tags, order t-shirts, etc. If you don’t show, you still pay….Finally, there’s something right about going to a meet and smelling burgers and dogs grilling on the bar-be-que….The staff at Sierra Vista can be commended on producing a friendly and fun invitational.
